December 10, 2012

So our internet is down again so this is going to be short.  I'm am staying in Paris, TN for another 6 weeks and I am with the same companion Elder Dempsey.

Things are going good we are teaching Alvin Travice still.  Things are going good, President Mckee is going to baptize him on the 15th - we wrangeld him into it :)
Everything is going super good ....

This just in: snow here in Tenn. The past two days it's been raining hard and flooding the area and now snow. lol  Whatever will they do? :)

So this Saturday we got to meet Russel M. Nelson.  It was pretty cool.  He was shorter than I thought, lol.  He spoke on a lot of things, but the biggest thing was be prepared for lots of people to start joining the gospel.     So I hope I'm ready! lol

December 3, 2012 E-mail

Hello, hello!

So finally we have gotten this man, Alvin Travis, to commit to being baptized on the 15th of December.  This is 8 months of effort from missionaries and this ward, this is a big step for Paris.     He is an ex-pastor for three congregations and loves to talk about church so much he can't be quiet.  He is 100 % open to everyone about the Book of Mormon and the Latter Day Saints (Tommy Monson) and (Christ Jesus) drag the 'e' on Jesus... he is a really big black man, he's pretty cool.

We are now teaching the man who sold Ralf Brotherson his big tall rig.  He said he will only listen to someone who has drilled before ... lol.  I don't know why but that's what he said. :)    He does not believe there is a god though, so piece of cake ... :)

Everthing is going good.  We are very busy with people.  We have been working with too many people so we have had to cut half so we could focus on people and teach with more clarity.  Time is going too fast. I wish I could describe it a lot better so U'ens could see the true work and wonders that happen every second ...

November 26, 2012 E-mail

This is going to be a short email, the computer and internet I am on keep losing connection :( .

So anyway, Thanksgiving went like a charm.  I didn't weigh myself, lol I forgot to... :)  But any how, we had a turkey that was marinated with the sanpete marinade..so so good!  Something fun we did before dinner is we made as many cookies we could in 2 hours then spent all the rest of the day taking them to everyone.  Everyone loved the cookies by the way ... :)
So the past 4 weeks we we have been on the ball or something; everyone has been inviting us to come teach their friends and the ward is super happy with us. We have every day full for dinner for a month and have lots and lots of support from everyone...

Anyway, our mission presidents wife had a heart attack this past week, but everything was caught in time - she's doing better.

Got to go, bye

November 19, 2012 E-mail

Everything is going good here in Paris. :)  In the past 3 weeks we have really started to get some people looking into the church and are really getting interested!  The gospel is a wild fire here in the south. Just to say some numbers, right now in Paris we are teaching 32 people (investigators).   Things are looking good :)  But for some odd reason no one will commit to baptism. But we teach them and they love everything, so I guess it's just not their time yet.  We had a member of the seventy come last Wednesday and he told us that this mission is working too hard... our numbers are the highest for english missions but we are not getting baptisms.  So we were told to start working smarter.  I was wondering to myself, "Is that possible?" lol

Today has started out with a crazy twist: we already talked to this kid named Jake. He is 19 and borderline homeless, we gave him some food that we had at the apartment... We have been meeting with Jake for the past two weeks and we finally set up an apointment at the church for tomorrow.

So I have been baking lots of cookies. I'm getting real good at that. lol. Last night I made some snickerdoodles from scratch. They were so goood! lol. I have been giving them to everyone. It really makes them feel good. :) Little do they know that I have been making them lol....  So for this Thanksgiving we have two families who are going to feed us. First we got the Barrons, a part member family at 2:30, and then around 5:00 the Vasquez family, a new convert family who is going to the temple real soon.

Nov. 12, 2012 E-mail

Hello!

We went to stake conference yesterday in Paducah, KY.   We showed up 2 hours early (it was the only ride we could get) and the building was locked up tighter then Fort Knox, lol....

So any way, some cool new missionary info- the first of the younger missionaries are hitting the first areas.  The typical size of the groups are normally around 8 to 16 new missionaries, but with the new ages they are filling up.  They have sent some missions 130 new missionaries in one group!  That's massive, wow!   We have 4 more weeks before our mission gets its group of younger missionaries.

This past week we have gotten 8 new people looking into the church, which is amazing because we have not had any new people to work with for the past 3 months.  We are truly being blessed for our labors.  We met with this older lady who has been studing anti LDS literature for years.  She told us that she does not care what anybody says, she is going to join this church because it is the only church of God.  We have also come across this part member family that the 12 year old granddaughter has been looking for a church the same way Joseph Smith did (going here and there).  Then she asked her grandmother what churches she had been to?  Her grandmother said she had been baptized LDS 20 years ago so they decided to give it a try again:)   They said it felt like coming home after being away for a long time.  These are two of thousands of experiences that are happening everyday.

Hello!

So the Tenn Nasville mission now has 7 stakes. Elder Christofferson came and split the stakes last week. He also left a blessing to the new stakes that this time forth they will not have any shortage of food and that they are to gather food for them selves and their neighbors...   That's some heavy stuff there, lol.

I am still in Paris. I have a new companion Elder Dempsey.   We have really hit the ground and have already seen a night and day difference in the area. Everyone we have been working with is now willing to change their lives.

So there is this man named Alvin Travis that we have been working with for a while. He use to be a pastor at this other church, he belives in the Book of Mormon and all the stuff we teach him. Today we are going over to his house to fix 2 cars and one truck. lol.

Any way life is good. We are busy with work and I am enjoying everything. :)

October 22, 2012 E-mail

Hello hello!

So everything is going crazy good here.  The Tenn Nashville mission has the highest numbers in everything except baptisms.  We are only high average there, so that's stuff just around the world.  So the new ages for missionaries is going to bring thousands of more missionaries in to the mission field in the next few months.  The Tenn Nashville mission just split another stake so now there is 7 stakes.  Since I first came out last year this mission has added 8 new areas (took from other missions), opened around 12 new wards (branches), and split the young single adults from 1 ward in to 5 with another one soon to be.  Things are going crazy in the south... as for Paris its self we have a lot a lot of investagators (friends) - like 29.   They all love us coming over but fail to ever want to change their church.  They dont see a need for truth, just a rock band or some guy to yell at them...
I'm doing great.  I finally hit 180 pounds like 3 weeks ago, but my body I guess is not made for the weight because I lost it all and am back to 165. :(  I still have not made any pictures yet to send home...

As for things I have learned, the biggest thing I have learned on my mission is trust. Now the thing which is really getting me is God's trust in us.  Like today we had a lesson with this older lady named Cathrine, and she has this concern about coffee and tea and she wants us to prove to her why it's bad for her.  So after talking and talking about all the bad stuff that was in it, it all came down to this: Father in heaven gave us the biggest gift - one that we could not even come close to understanding.   This gift was agency, the ability to choose and do.   It was part of our creation and this life was completely built around this gift.   Now this is where it's really got me going crazy about this trust thing.  We have been given commandments and we were told trust in the Lord and you will be blessed with everything ....... I had a personal "ah ha" through the Holy Ghost that this was a two way deal, so we trust in Father and Father trusts in us.  Now what that meant to me was because He knew  life on Earth would be hard and hard it is.  He knew we would try to choose right so as we receive trial after trial we should thank Father for knowing we could handle it . :)

If you are on, near, around, behind or standing on your computer, you might be a confused redneck.
If your grandmother chews tobacco while shooting a deer from the back window you might be in Kentucky.
If you have had to chain your house to a tree to keep it from being stolen your living in east Tenn.
If your 5 main food groups are Coon, Possum, Tobacco, Squirrel and Hog you are in the south.
If your heading north and wonder why it's getting more south your probibly going to fit in lol...
If you are going hunting and the only camo you have to hide you from the deer is your bare chest and your new suspenders, you probibly don't know it but your a Redneck.
If your house is a Nascar hall of fame it's a sure sign you're a redneck.
If you go to a church and the preacher has a mouth full of gold, and he says he needs more money to improve his families lifestyle, you are in a Penacostal church in Henry Tenn. (true story) lol we were asked to leave:) .....

If you ever find yourself looking at a house, horrified to go in, you might be on a mission and at your next dinner appointment. lol (it always seems to be the person that signs up every week)...
If you ever accidently pray that you don't die from the food , you might be a missionary with a name that starts with a P and ends with an N.
If you ever find a gross tie at a second chance store and think you are truly blessed you might be a missionary.:)
If you start to pick up rocks and are thinking about sending them home, you are on a mission.
When you look at girls and all you see are baptismal numbers, you are a good missanary.
When you go to the closet and only see white and black don't be alarmed you're on a mission...
When you wake up, get in the shower, get dressed and start studying, then wonder if your companion is sick or something because he is not up it might be 4:30am.............................
If you figure it would be funny to change the clock times to worry your companion and get him ready, you are on a mission lol..

So have fun every one, I am!

So sorry for slacking off for a long while... Anyway, things are going good.  It's been raining for the past 16 hours here.  There has not really been anything super cool that has happened in the past couple of weeks.
We have been meeting with this guy who was a preacher at another church and we are working with him a little bit.  He lets little litte things get in the way of us getting him to do anything, like crazy simple stuff.  But he is interested in becoming a member and he is a cool guy, but he is a difficult one.
We have been doing a lot of service on cars and stuff like that.   That's about it really.

Hello,

So around three weeks ago we got this referral for this guy named Razzi Alba and another for a Brian Jones and another for a Brian Emerson.  All of these are for the same address and they are all for a missionary visit so we went and met him.  Turns out, they are all the same man!  But anyway he is a 30 year old man who came across the church because of  Warren Jeffs...    But anyway he is doing very good.  He is going to be baptized on the 8 of Sept.  He is one of many many we are working with.

Hello out there,

I am in Paris, Tenn and am really liking it here.  There is at least  young people here.  It's been  so long since I have seen anyone young, I forgot how to talk to them. lol.

We have already found a guy who is really interested in the church so it's pretty cool. We live in an ancient apartment; it is so old and dusty. I vacuumed one room and had to change the filter.

My new companion Elder Mcnulty is a lot like me.  We like every thing the same so it's weird to have so many same likes.  He is the first Califonia Elder I have been with.  I do have to say neither of us like to write so we will see how that goes ...

So no more Crossville I am off to Paris, Tenn. No more Redneck, I'm going to the straight up hillbillies of Paducka. Maybe I will finally get me some coonburgers.  I am being sent there to teach this minister of a church. I don't know why but President Mckee said the Lord wants me to do it...  My new companion is Elder Mcnulty and we are going to have a blast .
So something funny, at church when they announced that I was leaving all the young men were crying.  So that was the big events for the week. lol.  Until next week. I will try to send a bigger e-mail.

So still in Crossville, Tenn.  It is warm out but not too bad.  So the Nashville Tenn mission is soon to be the highest baptizing english mission in the world.  The average for this mission was around 250 new converts a year.  This year we are already at around 600 at the end of July with lots of new perspective people every day.  The churches in the south states are all moving away from the basic
doctrines and it's really got a lot of people soul searching for the simple simple gosple of Jesus Christ.

Now it's so cool to see the book of Mormon come into play because it is the thing what most people are looking for and it changes lives...   Something interesting, the stake I am in right now is way over sized, like three times too big, and for some reason there is more and more missionaries being put in McMinville stake-enough for another mission to be opened up. So we will see what happens.  This stake has enough less actives to open up a third and fourth stake so we are focused on re-actives and baptizing part member families.

July 23, 2012 E-mail

Hello from Crossville!

Every thing is going great out here. We have another baptism this Wed the 25 and things are moving on and on.  We have the whole ward tuned around, they are starting to get it.  I met with Pres Mckee a little bit ago and was told that it took one person to change a whole ward and guess what?  It did...

This past week has been a true tornado- we have so many people who want to come out with us we are way way over scheduled.  The Lord's work is fun, so enjoy it.  That's all we are working on and it's really turning things around because the true gospel is a message of happiness.

It's so humid right now, as soon as you walk out the door you sweat and its only 79 degrees out. I fried my first cat fish this Friday. It tasted like burnt oil. I guess you have to at least see someone fry something first, so tonight sister Threet might show me how.

All my messing arouned with engines finally paid off this past week. A guy named Billy had a lawn mower that would not run so I pulled the whole thing apart, intake valve back to carb. I opened up the fuel jet, knocked out some casting and a few other things now, it is ready for the race track. It can now do almost twice factory speed:) Billy is super tickled about it. lol.

From a previous e-mail:

So this happend a little while back.   Michael is a guy we have been teaching ever since I got here in Crossville around April.   He lives next door to Wanda, she is a member.  We were over fixing Wanda's car, the brake lights were staying on. As I started to fix the lights  Michael went to go buy some corn on the cob. He walked to Krogear about 3/4 mile away.   By the time I had it fixed Elder B was looking to see what i did.   So I was talking to Wanda  and I see Michael walking up the street.  I look at the bag and I'm thinking he got some more beer... Any way, Michael walks up to Wanda and says ''Wanda, I got you some mayonnaise.'' Wanda says  ''I don't need any maynonnaise. I already have some''.  Michael says ''I actually went to the store and got you mayonnaise.''  Wanda says ''I thought you went to the store to get corn?''    Michael says ''It's mayonnaise.''  Then Michael walks up to his porch sits down with arms folded and pouts...   meanwhile Wanda and I are rolling laughing and Elder B missed it all. lol .....

July 9, 2012 e-mail

Another week of fun and games here in Crossville. Yesterday I had to speak in church and had three weeks to prepare for it. So I chose to just wing it at the stand. It went really good, I was asked to speak on the restoration. I started off with 2 Nephi 25:26 then went to Helaman 5:12.  After that I pretty much told everyone to suck it up and look to the Savior, use Him and His atonement to fix their lives, get rid of pride and start new...

So the 4th of July week = no one in sight.  There was like 2 families out of 32 families we are teaching home .. it was an adventure though :)
I'm doing good, staying very fit even though we always are in the car - which is nice when it is 103 all the time!

Love you all,

Caleb

P.S.-I have a funny story and will send it next week. I have it written down so I won't forget.

July 3, 2012 E-mail

Hello!
This week has been real hot, 109 degrees, but it's dry so it's not too bad. Everyones lawns are dying, they have no way of watering anything out here. But what can you say? lol.

So two things happened this week. First off, we went over to see this less active guy. We were talking about the power grid here in Tenn ... in the middle of the conversation I asked if all his kids had been
baptized and he said "No, ill go get her." So he went to go get her. When he came back we asked her if she wanted to be baptized and she said she really wants to be. We are looking at the 21st of July for that.

The second thing that happend was we have this guy who is investigating the church. We were having a lesson when all of a sudden he punched the member who was with us in the forehead. It was pretty crazy after that for a min. After she left (the member who was with us) we gave him a talking to - so craziness...

June 25, 2012 E-mail

Hello,

I'm doing good out here. I am staying in Crossville for another six weeks; I am still with the same companion.  We had a baptism this Saturday. It was really good, we went all out on it and it worked out.

So a funny thing - I said the baptisimal prayer and baptized her. Afterwards I pulled the plug so the font could drain then got out and went to change. Just as I was tying my tie the 2nd counsler in the stake presidency came in and said that I did it wrong and had to re-do it. So I hurried and got back in to my wet clothes and went back out and the font is really low, just below my knees. Katlin is about 5'9" so not too short but anyways, somehow we got her all the way under the water and it was right the second time ;).   I had said having been commisond by Jesus Christ instead of having been commissoned of Jesus Christ. So it's important to say it right...  Then after that we moved a baby grand piano so it was a successful day.

So how is every one back home ? I am doing well. I am still getting attacked by bugs and have a lot of fun stories. Everyday is a grand adventure. Last week we went caving in sparta with a bunch of other elders and found out that it's always best to ask if someone is clostrophobic before you let them crawl down a tight tunnel..its always best. Anyway, that went a lot better then expected.

I came across this guy in the ward named James Kendrick. He's been a member for 5 years.  He is the funniest man alive. All we do is poke fun at each other.  He is also the assistant ward mission leader so we are around him a lot. lol. I still have not even been around our ward misson leader he is a less active guy, go figure right? They are starting to keep missionaries in areas for 6 to 9 months. That's a long time and Crossville has a lot of potential. This ward is fun, everyone loves us, I am out here to have a lot of fun and the members really like that.  We are still having ice cream partys. The worlds biggest tree house is here, that's cool.
Love,
Caleb

June 11, 2012‏ E-mail

Hello,

I got the two birthday packages. We made the cake and melted all the candles into the icing before I could blow them out. Thanks for the knife it's really cool but always falls out of my pockets. The first thing I did with the knife was rub it on my arm and guess what? I have a really big bald spot on my arm, found out you can shave with it. :) Thanks a bunch for the package.

So everything summed up: I am still in Crossville and everyone is still old here. We are working with Katlin for June 23. Everything is going smooth there.

This past week we were in McMinville most of the week. Lots of driving. My companion drives and has got the worst reaction time I have ever seen, so it's an act of faith just to ride with him... ;)

Marquee board of the week: "7 days without prayer makes one weak".

We have been seeing a lot of people and they are always saying come to our church, so last night we went to central baptist church. It was pretty cool. All they talked about there was donating money to the building fund, they wanted everyone to donate $1,500 to $6,500 a month - that is on top of their tithing of 10% - seems a little much considering they already have a building that's truly huge. It's like New York Yankees stadium big... they have already received $6,750,000.00 for their building so far this year. It's really big business out here, but they did have a good rock band.

Lots of love,
Elder Poulson

I am doing really good. So since we first got here in Crossville I have talked with this guy at church and made good friends with him and his wife. So they have been having us over for dinner every other week with their family. But any ways they are all members except Katlin, his wifes daughter. She is 15... but any ways she has decided that she wants to be baptized (this happened friday) so we are now teaching her, she wants to be baptized on the 23 of June. Yesterday we hade zone play day in Mcminville (MaC-mun-vuLL) so thats why I'm emailing today. So Crossville - a little about it - it's famous for it's baptist churches and for being the most racist people in the United States. They had their last hanging of a black in the mid 1980's. They are all so proud of running all of the Jehovas wittnesses out of the county. It's an interesting place, I have really started to like it here though. Right now we are focused on the younger people of the area. All of the older generation is too set in their ways. Everything is moving along. Love, Caleb

I have no trouble talking to any one and am making too many friends. So everything is going really good. The weather is staying around 82 here and I am dying. It's so hot! Drinking lots of water and its good for us...

So we are teaching this guy named Michael, he's 42 and always drunk. He knows everything and desperately wants to be baptized but he cant stop drinking. He told us to push him to stop so I have took it to heart. It's kinda funny, we knock on his door then rush in, find all his drinks, throw them away and then say "What's up Michael!"
   So it's really eventful...  :)

So Crossville is super slow people wise. It makes me never want to get old, lol. So we are trying to get the ward young and it's working. We are seeing every single person on the ward list and inviting them to church. I think we have ten people reactivated and really have the ward boosted.

I  gave a talk last week-so me and my big mouth said I would do any thing crazy to get the awkward out of the way so we could get to business. So I have been doing some pretty crazy things at request. lol. Everything is going great.

Hello out there in tv land this is your favorite emailer.

There is finally time to email. So the past two weeks in Crossville (Crosvull) have been so fast we are really picking things up. We have got three families re-activated, with plenty more to see. We are trying to get the ward to just talk to some one else each week. I'ts working amazingly.  The area mostly consists of retired and people on disability.
So last night around 8 we were walking back towards our apartment to get the car when we saw this van down the road with the hazards on. I could not see any one but we decided to go see if we could help. We got to the van and this lady was praying for someone to come help.  Go  figure, we show up.  So we get to her and ask what's wrong....she was out of gas and didn't have a phone.  She was so scared she was pleading for us to just stay with her. We were like lady, calm down... we are not going to leave you all alone here. But anyway, a cop drove by, and we pushed her car to a parking lot near by. We didn't talk to her about the church or anything but really left the cop and her with good impressions of who we are...    So any how, I got rid of the bed bugs finally and life is good. On mothers day I can skype home so I was thinking that it might be fun to do. I know its a little ways out there but what ever yall want to do.  I will be making some pictures today to send home.
Love you lots,  Caleb

Hey,
I'm doing great. So we had 5 baptisms this past Saturday. It was really cool. So this Tuesday is transfers and I found out I will be going to Clifton, TN. It's the farthest east the misson goes. I hear that it's an older ward so we will see. But anyways, I am staying very busy busy busy and focused. So today I did a buffalo hot wings challenge and i guess im allergic to the sauce. But I will e-mail a longer message next week.

Hey,
Every thing is going really good. So we had a baptism this Saturday - a guy named king James Williams. We got every thing ready, and he showed up at the church and so did the cops he got arrested...but any ways he ended up coming to church yesterday. And we had a lot of re-activates and investigators there in gospel principles class and king bore his testimony followed by Misty Faccadio, an investigator, (she is very shy) then everyone shared how the gospel changed their lives, and how Jesus is a fourth watch Savior. It was so cool to be there.
This ward is so cool we have tons of support from them. They tell us that we are the most trusted and hard working elders they have ever had here. There is so much activity here its crazy! Time is flying by ... We have 4 truly converted people to to be baptized on the 31 so it will be cool. We are focused on less active families and it is a lot of fun.
So two days ago I found a really nice knife on the side of the road. I guess it will replace the one TSA got. It's 80 degrees outside with about 75% humidity. No leaves on the trees but lots of grass. I am in true redneck country and am 13 of 15 on knowing the guns out here... Any ways talk to you later,
love Caleb

Hi,

I'm doing fine. I live in the nicest apartment in the misson. It's called the Taj Mahal. Everything is going well. I am companions with an elder I came out with the first time. So any ways, I finally got a gun pulled on me...I did know what it was so he let me get a picture with it. I am in a military area so it's always fun to talk to people. We are working on less active members almost completely. The ward I am in is really nice and we get a lot done.

Out of time. Talk to you next week.
